HARVARD UNIVERSITY

Harvard University is the oldest and one of the most prestigious universities in the United States. It was established in 1636 and is the famous and foremost institute for higher learning in the United States.

The University is committed to perfection in teaching, learning, research, and improve leaders in many directions who make a difference globally. It has often served as the benchmark for higher education in the US. It is one of the Ivy League schools.

The University has risen from 9 students and a single teacher to a list of more than 20,000 candidates including, undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The student comes from 50 states and over 80 countries covering the cities, small towns, and farms, including the public and local schools, and religious backgrounds.

History

Established in 1636 by a vote of the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. It was formerly called New College, and in 1639 the name changed to Harvard College after late clergyman John Harvard, an alumnus of the University of Cambridge. The significant gift led the school to honor him by taking his name. A statue of him placed in Harvard Yard, known as one of the best landmarks throughout the entire campus. Puritan clergyman Henry Dunster was elected the first president in 1640. In 1708, John Leverett became the first president and was not a clergyman. Harvard’s primary graduate school established in 1782 as the school of medicine.

Moving towards the 18th century, on 8 September 1836, the famous Harvard shield was created, with the current motto ‘VERITAS’ meaning the truth.

Drew Gilpin Faust became Harvard’s first woman president on 1 July 2007 and was succeeded by Lawrence Bacow on 1 July 2018.

Master of Science in Computational Science and Engineering –  It is for those who have already finished the first degree in Computational Science and Engineering. The course duration is of 1 year. The total 1st-year tuition fee is INR 35.6 Lakh. GRE accepted and scores in TOEFL should be 80 or high.

Master in Public Administration – The program develops the student towards the position that is having significant responsibilities in the public, private, and non-profitable sectors. The course duration is of 2 years. The total 1st-year Tuition Fee is INR 34.9 Lakh. IELTS and TOEFL accepted. Scores required are in IELTS – 7 or above and, in TOEFL – 80 or high.

Master in Public Policy –   It is a course that makes the students to understand complex policy problems and to craft real solutions. The course duration is of 2 years. The total 1st Year Tuition Fee is around INR 34.9 Lakh. Exams accepted are IELTS and TOEFL. The scores in TOEFL should be 92 or high.

Master of Arts in Education – Students acquire new analytical skills and explore the relationship of art with the other sectors. The course duration is of 1 year. Total 1st Year Tuition Fee is INR 33.7 Lakh. IELTS and TOEFL accepted. The scores in IELTS should be 7.5 or above, and in TOEFL should be 104 or high.

Master in Architecture I – prepares graduates for the full range of professional activities in the field of architecture. The course duration is of 2.5-4 Years. The total 1st Year Tuition Fee is around INR 35 Lakh. Exams accepted are GRE and TOEFL. The scores in TOEFL should be 92 or high.

Master in Landscape Architecture I (MLA I) – A solid intellectual base of knowledge in design, history, theory, technology, ecology, representation, and professional practices develops in students. Business Courses

Notable Alumni of Harvard University

Barack Obama – The US President, a Nobel Prize winner and a US Representative, Barack Obama entered the Harvard Law School in 1988 and became the first black president of the Harvard Law Review. He also played basketball within the black law students association team.

Al Gore –  He finished his graduation from Harvard in 1969. His time at the college encourage his interest in global warming, and he later served as the 45th vice president of the United States from 1993 to 2001. He wrote a famous thesis titled, ‘The Impact of Television on the Conduct of the Presidency, 1947-1969’.

Bill Gates – He started studying at Harvard in 1973. He enrolled in applied math. The founder of Microsoft left Harvard in 1975 after just two years. In 2007, he returned to receive an honorary law degree.

Mark Zuckerberg – He enrolled at Harvard in 2002 and launched Facebook from the college’s dorms. He announced his decision in an interview with The Harvard Crimson; when he was on campus in 2005, attempting to recruit other students to join his company. The Facebook CEO dropped out his sophomore year to pursue the social network.

Helen Keller – She is the first blind and deaf person to earn a bachelor’s degree. She graduated from Harvard’s Radcliffe College in 1904.

Neil deGrasse Tyson – The most famous astrophysicist in the world received his bachelor’s degree in physics at Harvard in 1980. He continued to pursue his interest in wrestling and was also a talented dancer. An intelligent and curious boy, he was deeply fascinated by astronomy and was the editor-in-chief of the school’s Physical Science Journal.

Benazir Bhutto –  She is known as the Iron Lady of Pakistan. Benazir Bhutto founded the politics for women in Pakistan. She was the head of the Pakistan People’s Party and served as the foremost female Prime Minister of Pakistan. She went to the US to register at Radcliffe College, Harvard University. She finished her graduation with a Bachelor of Arts degree with cum laude honors in 1973.

Ratan Tata –  He is one of the leading industrialists in India. The chairman-emeritus of the Tata Sons graduated from the Harvard Business School with the advanced management program (AMP) in 1975. He earned the position of the chairman of the Tata Group in 1991, and on 28 December 2012, he resigned from the post of Chairman.

Adi Godrej – The chairman of the Godrej Group ‘Adi Godrej’ left India when he was of age 17. He finished his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in management in 1963 from the prestigious Sloan School of Management. He returned to India and joined his family business at the age of 21.

Sundar Pichai –  He recently appointed as Google’s new chief executive. Graduated with an MBA degree from Wharton in 2002, he continued his MS degree in material sciences and engineering from Stanford University.

Anil Ambani – The chairman of the Reliance Group Ambani graduated with an MBA from Wharton in 1983. Ambani was also the first person to receive the Wharton Indian Alumni Award.
