Save Earth – combined effort to fight climatic changes!!

The world's biggest concern today is the climatic changes that are happening on the Earth. Though there are many factors contributing to GLOBAL WARMING, One of the main reason is the greenhouse gas – Carbon Dioxide which is a heat-trapping gas causing sudden changes in the environment. Global warming is explained as the long term rise in the Earth’s average climatic temperature. With suchan awareness and debates globally, the greenhouse emissions are still on the rise and will be resumed in the atmosphere for decades causing harm to our future generation as well. It needs an immediate stop which is only possible with equal vital contributions by each and every person on the globe.

Climatic changes

Climatic changesThe sudden weather surges in recent years have been responsible for the loss of lives and the ecosystem. There have been an increased number of floods, drought, heat waves, turbulent winds, wildfires and much more causing an environmental catastrophe. The climatic shifts have resulted due to the human endeavors and more importantly exploited use of ecosystem.

The recent climate shift witnessed cold snap during ice cold weather conditions in the US due to polar vortex which has been directly linked to global warming, where greenhouse emissions have disrupted the pressure and temperature gradient at the polar vortex resulting in sudden chills and an enormous cold snap. This clearly explains that the Earth’s climate is changing, and it's affecting our weather in a variety of ways all across the globe.

Many scientific pieces of evidence have shown the rapid climate changes that are happening as a result of global warming and the heat-trapping nature of carbon dioxide majorly and other gases in the Earth's atmosphere.

  • The rise in global temperature of the Earth’s climate system to 1.62 degree Fahrenheit due to the greenhouse gas emissions.
  • The ocean temperatures have been rising and the ocean waters are causing melting of the undersides of Antarctic ice shelves.
  • Ocean acidification due to industrialization is damaging coral reefs and is also causing a threat to the marine ecosystem.
  • Glaciers everywhere around the world, especially at the Earth’s poles are melting at an accelerating rate and due to this there about 0.13 inches rise in the sea level every year and is continuously accelerating.
  • There is a reduction in the amount of spring snow cover in the Northern Hemisphere
  • Changes in rainfall patterns are resulting in extreme events as more floods, droughts and intense rainfall and storm surges.
  • There have been extended growing seasons of plants due to variations in temperature and weather conditions.

This recent Global warming holds the acts of Humans responsible for every action and a dominant cause of the resultant relentless rise in greenhouse gas producing activities. The Earth is heating up at an alarming rate by the influence of mankind. Therefore, it is “WE” who need to understand and preserve our Earth for a better place to live in. The climate system is so complex that it takes a long time to change and the climate change can never stop even if we reduce the greenhouse emissions instantly. Though we cannot reduce the effects of climate change suddenly but we can surely reduce the emissions which can, in turn, limit the impact of global warming. According to recent scientific predictions, the average temperature of the Earth's surface will increase to 3.7°C - 4.8°C by 2100 if no measures are taken for reducing the greenhouse gas emissions. But if we take measures and steps to reduce the greenhouse gas emission by 40 to 70 percent by 2050, there would be a temp increase below 2°C.

The impacts of global warming and climate change – we must be aware!!

global warming and climate changeRising temperatures across the world are affecting wildlife and ecosystem. A higher temperature is causing the ice to melt and this has challenged the species as penguins in Antarctica, which is proven scientifically that its populations on the western peninsula have got collapsed by near to 90 percent.

As a result of changing temperatures and the climate change, the Ecosystems will continue to change which will cause some species to move farther north and get adapted or would affect others, such as polar bears, who won’t be able to adapt and get extinct. Many species of butterflies, foxes, and alpine plants have been seen migrating farther north or to areas having a cooler climate.

There would be Less freshwater available on Earth due to the melting of glaciers since they store about three-quarters of the world's freshwater.

Many places on the planet will get affected due to a higher temperature and climate change like Africa which can face an increased risk of crop failure due to high heat and drought possibly. Similarly, the Asian continent would suffer due to increased flooding from heavy storms and majorly tropical cyclones. Even, North America will be affected by increased wildfires and deadly heat waves due to increased temperatures. Floods and droughts as seen in recent time will become more common. The changing climate and weather conditions lead to an assumption that large parts of the U.S. will face a higher risk of decades-long "megadroughts" by 2100.

How can we stop global warming?

We should stand for the change as changes will only happen when action is taken at an individual level. We need to stop Global Warming resulting because of our influence and actions in releasing greenhouse gases in the environment. The goal actually is quite simple- to reduce the Carbon Dioxide emission and there are many ways to put this into effect.

Stand out and speak up

stop global warmingTo make an effort to bring out the change in global climate change, all we need to do is to stand up and voice our opinions. We need to talk to every person we know and educate them to be a part of the move to fight climate change and stand together for the warming world. Every responsible citizen should consider this and encourage their governments to take step towards fighting global warming. They should enact new laws to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases mainly Carbon dioxide and there should be a punishable offense who do not follow the law to reduce carbon emissions.

We need to stand out as a climate activist Greta Thunberg who has voiced against global warming and climate change. She stood out to be starting school strike for climate change and has inspired an international movement for fighting climate change. She voiced her opinions through school strikes every Fridays outside Sweden parliament. This led to an inspiration among students from around the world - tens of thousands of students from Germany, Japan, the UK, Australia and many more to join her #FridaysforFuture demonstrations. This has been the biggest move to step against climate change at a young age.

“I realized no one is doing anything to prevent this from happening so then I have to do something”- Greta Thunberg

The efforts must be made at an individual level to “Save our Mother Earth” and fight against the rising in warming climate.

Countries should start working together for a global change

All the countries especially the world’s major nations will have to work together to stop global warming. Cutting down the carbon emissions by one nation would not provide a solution to the problem of global warming but every country should adopt measures to reduce greenhouse emissions. The biggest change occurred when they came together to sign Kyoto protocol and recently The Paris Agreement 2015 within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) focusing widely on reducing greenhouse gases emissions, adapting to the impacts of climate change, and to provide financial assistance to developing countries affected by a changing climate. Though climate change is a global issue it is actually felt at the local scale, therefore it should be handled at the city level by municipalities to adopt climate policies to solve their climate problems.

All countries should enforce laws to reduce greenhouse emissions and encourage their citizens as well as educate them regarding the effects and impact of global warming and what measures we can take to stop it with immediate effect.

Global warming is indeed a global issue. It requires strong international efforts that work towards reducing emissions around the world.

Start at your home

The change begins at home, if you want some change at a high level it should begin from the lowest level and our house is the right place. This must start with the use of renewable energy options that generate at least half its power from wind or solar and has been certified to do so.

Adding solar panels to your house cuts down your electricity bills as well as help in contributing to a safe environment by using renewable energy sources.

Replace your light bulbs to quality LED bulbs that are energy efficient because they consume 75% less energy than light bulbs

Clean the HVAC filters on your air conditioner or heater to cut out energy consumption as dirty filters make the system work harder and consume a higher amount of energy.

Use furniture made of using recyclable material and discourage deforestation by using wood furniture from the certified forest but not from the old forest or cutting trees illegally.

Save electricity and avoid wasting it by switching off lights, fans, and other appliances when not in use. It is better to unplug the devices as they are still drawing g power in sleep mode.

Make use of energy efficient appliances at your home as energy efficiency is a cost-effective way to reduce carbon emissions.

Reduce water wastage

Reduce water wastageWater management helps save the energy that is used to pump, heat and treat the groundwater for drinking purposes. In other words, saving water reduces carbon pollution.

To reduce water wastage:

Take shorter showers or use bucket filled with water to take a bath.

Turn off taps while brushing your teeth.

Avoid overflowing of water and keep taps closed when not in use. The better way is to use water sensor systems to prevent water leakage at your homes.

Rainwater harvesting, mainly rooftop harvesting should be encouraged for storage of water in areas of the low water level. This water can be stored for watering of plants, garden, irrigation, washing of clothes and washing of vehicles.

Use full loads of clothes in the washing machine.

Use cold water to wash clothes and avoid water heating as it is an energy intensive process.

Reduce food wastage

Reduce food wastageThrowing away food is a serious issue globally and many global campaigns, as well as national level awareness, is encouraging and insisting people to avoid wastage of food. Food production uses a tremendous amount of energy, water, and land to produce that food and wastage of food releases methane from rotten food, and we should know that methane is a powerful greenhouse gas. Consumption of local foods should be encouraged as packaging, shipping and making available consumes huge consumption of energy.
Food loss and waste wastage are a global problem and these can only be solved through collaboration. To save Earth and make it a suitable place to live, everyone should contribute from farmers to retailers, from local governments to individual households

Drive less and drive Smart

Use fuel efficient vehicles and keep a check on your tires as keeping them properly inflated can improve your gas mileage above than 3 percent. And it actually contributes in a step towards Saving Earth as every gallon of gasoline that is saved keeps 20 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. Drive only when needed and people should drive smart through carpooling and contributing to saving fuel because less driving means fewer emissions. Adopt walking and cycling to reduce your carbon footprint.

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

Every individual should contribute to reducing waste by choosing reusable products and avoid using disposables including plastic water bottles, containers, and packaging materials. Reducing 10 percent of garbage will effectively save 1,200 pounds of carbon dioxide. Recycling of products like paper, plastic, glass etc. should be done which can effectively reduce the waste and save large amounts of energy. People should be encouraged to imply “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle” as their motto. Recycling only about half of our household waste can reduce 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide per year.

Plant more trees- Save Earth

Plant more trees- Save EarthWe should plant more and more trees as a single tree will absorb about one ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime reducing the carbon load on Earth and reducing accumulation of carbon as a greenhouse gas in the atmosphere.

One of the best ways to conserve energy is by sharing information to others and encouraging others to take steps to conserve the environment as our combined efforts only can make a big difference to save our Earth.
