Citizenship Amendment Bill that seeks to give Indian citizenship to refugees from Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist and Zorastrian communities fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh was passed with a thumping majority in Lok Sabha on Monday night (December 9) after six hours of intense debate.
The Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha, following a marathon debate which continued past midnight on Tuesday. After passing in the Lok Sabha, the Bill would now be moved in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday to cross its final hurdle before becoming a law.
The Bill passed with a majority of 311 votes against 80 in the Lok Sabha, requires the support of at least 123 MPs to sail through the 245-member Upper House. The question arises here as to how the BJP-led NDA government be able to pass the Citizenship Bill in the Rajya Sabha?
Amid massive protests in Assam against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019, agitators on Tuesday chased and attacked Assam Education Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya’s convoy. The protestors also pelted stones on his convoy. In a 42-second video, a convoy consisting of five vehicles were seen being chased by a crowd on a flyover in Guwahati. The crowd were seen rushing towards the vehicles which reversed and sped away.
